William J. Cosby Sr. - February 4, 2004

William J. Cosby Sr., 82, of 112 Chestnut St., Minonk, died at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 3, 2004) at Eureka Community Hospital, Eureka.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Calvert & Froelich Memorial Home, Minonk, with the Rev. Rick Troyer officiating. Burial will follow in Minonk Township Cemetery, Minonk. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and for one hour before services Friday at the memorial home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Mr. Cosby was born Dec. 5, 1921, in Clinton, Ind., the son of Ray C. and Augusta R. Kitchen Cosby. He married Gloria P. Witte on Jan. 19, 1946, in Aurora. She survives.

Also surviving are seven children, William (Crystal) Cosby Jr., Minonk; Susan (Jim) Cordray, Bullhead City, Ariz.; Judy (Bill Dietz) Cosby, Maryville, Tenn.; Terry Cosby, Rutland; Charles (Janice) Cosby, Minonk; Daniel Cosby, Minonk; and Timothy (Stephanie) Cosby, Wenona; one brother, Ray Cosby, Malden, Mass.; four sisters, Norma Mendez, Alameda, Calif.; Mary Vargas and Joanne Vargas, both of Alameda, Calif.; and Beverly Silar, Aurora; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and one great-granddaughter.

Mr. Cosby was of the Methodist Faith. He was a lifetime member of the Minonk VFW Post 7185 and a member of the UAW Local 974. He was an avid fisherman and bowled on the Saturday night Mix League in Minonk.

Mr. Cosby was a seaman 1st class in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theater. He retired from the Mossville Caterpillar in January 1985.

He was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be sadly missed by all.
